MUSEUM STAGES TWO MAJOR EXHIBITIONS IN 2010 May 2010
Thoroughbred: State of the Art
For centuries the thoroughbred horse has been both magnet and inspiration for artists who have produced some truly great paintings. This exhibition includes many fine examples with works by Stubbs, Munnings, Wootton, Herring and others. They have been specially selected to illustrate the two main themes of racing art – the portrait of the racehorse and the movement of the horse since the late Seventeenth Century. The works include this magnificent painting (left) of 'Sceptre' by Emil Adam.

The exhibition has been produced jointly by the National Horseracing Museum and the British Sporting Art Trust using works from their collections enhanced by loan pictures from the Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum, the Jockey Club and private collections.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is 'Under Starter’s Orders' by Sir Alfred Munnings. This is one of his largest paintings and depicts the start, the one part of the race that fascinated Sir Alfred and presented him with what he considered to be his greatest challenge.

British Sporting Art
This exhibition contains some fine examples from the British Sporting Art Trust’s collection in the form of paintings, prints and sculptures representing a broad selection of sports including hunting, fishing, boxing, rugby, rowing and horseracing.

The Trust was established to bring together a representative collection of sporting art for public exhibition and to promote interest in the subject. The focal point of the 2010 exhibition, in the Sporting Art Trust’s Vestey Gallery, are two important pictures by John Ferneley Snr ‘A Run near Melton Mowbray’ and ‘Hunting in Croxton Park, Huntingdonshire’.
